Cherished Collectable's, Inc., Dolls By Mary Benner,
was established in 1992. We are a very small family business
with myself, Mary Benner, being the artist and designer of all
the lovely dolls you see in our gallery and many more which
are not shown. She started making porcelain dolls as a hobby
in 1989, over the past 20 years she has made hundreds
of dolls. When she looks back at pictures of her early dolls,
they look quite primitive compared to the award winning
masterpieces she creates now. Her husband of 36 years, Allen,
pours the molds for most of her dolls and he is also the
fantastic photographer of her dolls! Allen also helps pack
and
ship the dolls all over the world. Her daughter, Marlee, helps
her with her books.
Mary Benner specializes mostly one of a kind antique replicas and
occasionally - time allowing - her all original (sculpted by
her) artist dolls. She started sculpting dolls in 1996 and at
that time her husband Allen and herself made all of their rough molds by hand, a
very tedious job. However, the past few years, since the
birth of their grandchildren, Mary has not had much time to
sculpt and design original dolls. Her antique replicas are
her
true love and she never gets tired of making them.
Unfortunately though, because her time is so limited now,
she is only able to make a small number of dolls a year.
Cherished Collectables has gone through a lot of changes
over the years. Mary Benner used to do doll shows up and
down the east coast. However she seldom does doll shows anymore as
her dolls sell so quickly, it's too hard to put a
collection together to make doing a doll show
worthwhile.
A few years ago she was having some of the dolls in her
collection manufactured in China. But because of problems
with the factory overseas and the great risks involved, she
is no longer producing factory made dolls. However, she does
have a few factory made Petite Dolls left for sale.
Over the years Mary has designed and sold her dolls on the Home
Shopping Network up until a few years ago when they did away
with their doll division. In recent years she has been
designing dolls for the Marie Osmond collection and she has
several dolls that will be coming out in her collection in
the near future.
Allen and Mary reside in Virginia Beach, VA with their dog,
Callie. They have 2 daughters, Marlee and Brandi and 6
grandchildren who live not far from them. |
